The Statham Police Department is proud to now offer
The Eddie Eagle Gun Safety Program
The program was begun in 1988 and has reached more than 21 million children in all 50 states. The purpose of the program is not to teach whether guns are good or bad, but rather to promote the protection of the safety of our children. The program makes no value judgments about firearms and NO LIVE FIREARMS are in the classroom or ever used in the program. Like swimming pools, matchbooks and household poison, they are treated as a fact of everyday life. With firearms being found in over half of American households, it's a stance that makes sense.
The program is designed for Pre-K through third grade and is FREE of charge. It's available to schools, day care centers, churches and civic groups. The interactive learning module includes a seven-minute dvd, student workbook, reward sticker, Certificate of Accomplishment, and a parents' guide to gun safety.
Whether or not a family owns a firearm, chances are relatives and neighbors do. From their earliest awareness, children are exposed to firearms through cartoons, television, and movies. Children are curious about firearms and often develop an inaccurate perception of what a firearm is or does.
Just as Smokey the Bear teaches children not to play with matches, Eddie Eagle teaches not to play with firearms in a simple, memorable four-part plan: STOP! DON'T TOUCH! LEAVE THE AREA. TELL AN ADULT.
The Statham Police Department is immediately available to offer this program to 300 children. We have materials for children and parents.
If you want more information on this program, please contact Michael Pruitt at the City of Statham Police Department, Neighborhood Watch & Community Oriented Policing Services, 770-725-5992.
